Church History

The Canadian Reformed churches are Calvinist in doctrine and find their historical roots in the Netherlands.

Ancaster Canadian Reformed Church was founded in 1987. Its original members came fromĀ Hamilton Cornerstone Canadian Reformed Church, which had outgrown its building. We are part of the Canadian and American Reformed Churches, a federation of about fifty churches across Canada and the United States.

Why we call ourselves “Canadian Reformed”

We are Canadian, meaning that God has placed us in this beautiful country with the calling to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, to live as respectable citizens and to promote the coming of God’s Kingdom. We are Reformed, meaning our roots go back to the great Reformation in the 1500’s when God caused his church to return to the fundamentals (namely: Scripture alone, faith alone, grace alone) of the Christian faith. This reformation was led by such men as Martin Luther, John Calvin, Ulrich Zwingli and John Knox who reaffirmed the truths of the Bible. We are a Church, meaning a gathering or community of people who believe in, worship, and witness to the Triune God.
